The Andhra Pradesh government has urged the Union Jal Shakti Ministry to halt new irrigation projects being taken up by Telangana on the Krishna River. Telangana issued a GO on September 16 to prepare DPRs for 16 new projects in Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Ranga Reddy, Warangal and Khammam districts. AP officials say the Centre has not cleared these works. They also stated that Telangana initiated 42 new projects after the state bifurcation.

AP’s Water Resources Department wrote that projects need approval from the CWC, Apex Council and KRMB. The department asked the Centre to stop any new construction until all permissions are completed. Officials claim that these new works may affect AP’s share of Krishna water. They therefore requested the Centre not to grant any approvals for now.

Sources say AP informed the Centre that its interests may face harm if Telangana moves ahead. They also stated that AP expects the Centre to issue clear instructions soon. An official statement from AP is yet to be released.

If the letter is officially confirmed, political circles are keen to see how Telangana will respond. Observers expect the issue to become a major inter-state matter.

Andhra Pradesh has recently withdrawn the Polavaram-Banakacherla project and introduced a new initiative called the Polavaram-Nallamala Link Project. A tender notice has been issued to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this construction. The state’s Water Resources Department has invited e-procurement tenders, following all statutory clearances and CWSC guidelines. The project is being developed under the EPC turnkey system, with Rs 7.68 crore allocated over 12 months. Tender submissions are open until next month.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh had planned the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project with an estimated cost of Rs 80,000 crore. Telangana strongly opposed this plan, stating it would harm state interests. The government resolved not to release any portion of its Godavari share. Legal and administrative measures were initiated to block the project. Meetings with central ministers and MPs were conducted to convey objections.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar personally met Union Minister CR Patil in Delhi. They also briefed party MLAs with a detailed presentation, highlighting the project’s potential violations. The Centre subsequently rejected Andhra Pradesh’s environmental clearance applications for the original project.

Despite previous cancellations, Andhra Pradesh renamed the project and revived it as Polavaram-Nallamala Link Project. Tenders have been invited for DPR preparation, prompting Telangana to prepare countermeasures. The state has affirmed it will prevent the project from proceeding under any circumstances.

The Telangana government has launched major efforts to improve dam safety across the state. Union Minister C.R. Patil recently wrote to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, urging strict monitoring of all 173 dams. He asked the state to complete the Comprehensive Dam Safety Evaluation (CDSE) within 15 months and suggested seeking help from the National Dam Safety Authority if needed.

In response, the irrigation department listed all dams notified under the Dam Safety Act 2021. The Centre reminded the state that the first CDSE for each dam must be finished within five years of the Act’s implementation. Telangana’s deadline is December 2026. Taking the matter seriously, the Chief Minister held a review meeting with top irrigation officials.

He directed officials to prepare detailed status reports for all major and minor dams. Based on these reports, the government will hold another review meeting in the second week of November to finalize further action plans.

Union Minister Patil also named key projects under the Act, including Medigadda, Mid Manair, Lakshmi Sagar, Ramappa Lake, Dindi, and Gandipalem. The government will give special attention to dams such as Himayatsagar, Usmansagar, and Manjeera for close monitoring.

Ambedkar Pranahita–Chevella Sujala Sravanthi Project with a cost-efficient strategy. He said the government aims to cut costs by 10–12 percent, saving nearly ₹1,600 crore through a revised alignment via the Sundilla Link.

During a review meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, the Minister said the new plan would reduce land acquisition and avoid coal-bearing zones that previously delayed the project. He emphasized that the government seeks to make the project technically strong, financially viable, and environmentally responsible.

Uttam Kumar Reddy explained that the Sundilla Link is a practical and eco-friendly solution. It bypasses risky coal seams and uses existing infrastructure effectively to supply water to drought-hit regions of Telangana.

Earlier, water was drawn from the Pranahita River to the Yellampalli Barrage through a 71-kilometer canal. The revised route proposes a direct connection between Tummidihatti and Sundilla Barrages, shortening canals and tunnels while reducing costs and easing environmental approvals.
