Bengal CM resigns from MLA post after winning from two constituencies in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, stepped down from the Nandigram Assembly seat and submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker on Wednesday.

Bengal CM resigns from MLA post because election rules do not allow a leader to represent two constituencies at the same time. Adhikari had contested from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur and won in both seats.

His victory in these important constituencies created a major moment in the state’s politics. Adhikari had earlier defeated former chief minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections.

Following the election results, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a strong majority in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. The victory ended more than a decade of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress government.

Adhikari later took oath as the chief minister of West Bengal. After deciding to retain the Bhabanipur seat, he formally resigned from the Nandigram constituency as required by election rules.

A major political development has shaken West Bengal after the Governor dismisses Mamata Banerjee government following a prolonged political standoff. The decision came after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) faced a serious political setback and tensions escalated over the continuation of the state government.

The situation created a constitutional debate in the state. Despite increasing political pressure and criticism from opposition parties, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued to defend her government. As tensions grew, the Governor intervened and issued orders that led to the dismissal of the administration.

With the Governor dismisses Mamata Banerjee government, opposition leaders say the move could change the political landscape of West Bengal. Parties have started discussions about the formation of a new government and the next steps in the state’s administration.

Political observers say the decision marks a significant turning point in West Bengal politics and could reshape the state’s power balance in the coming months.

The West Bengal Election Results have sparked fresh discussions in political and business circles. Experts say the West Bengal Election Results may improve market sentiment and attract new investments to the state. Analysts believe a stable and investor-friendly policy environment could encourage more companies to invest in the region.

Many industries are watching the situation closely. Sectors like automobiles, manufacturing, and real estate may see higher investments if policies support business growth. Experts say the state could also stop the trend of industries shifting to other regions. If strong economic policies are implemented, West Bengal may move toward major economic growth like other large states in India.

However, economists warn that global factors may still influence markets. Changes in crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, and foreign investor activity can affect market trends. Analysts say the government must maintain financial discipline while promoting development and investments.

The East Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya has imposed a night curfew along the Bangladesh border amid rising security concerns. District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah issued the order on Tuesday, citing increased risks of infiltration by militants, smugglers, and individuals linked to illegal activities.

The curfew applies from 8 pm to 6 am within one kilometre of the Zero Line. It bans attempts to cross the international border, unlawful gatherings of five or more people carrying weapons, and activities such as smuggling cattle, contraband, betel nut, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves. The order was issued urgently under Section 163 of the BNSS and will remain in effect for two months unless revised earlier.

Officials explained that some parts of the border remain porous, allowing illegal migrants and insurgents to slip through, especially at night. Unchecked activity could disrupt public order and threaten peace in the district. The government assured residents that surveillance and preventive measures are ongoing.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said teams from Labour, Tourism, and other departments are conducting inspections in vulnerable areas like Umling. Ground surveillance continues steadily. He noted that issues like raids in South Garo Hills fall under the Home Department’s jurisdiction. Dhar also highlighted that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has discussed security concerns with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Governor.

Civil society groups, including the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), have called for stricter action. They warned that illegal migration, exacerbated by measures in Assam and West Bengal, threatens public safety, citizens’ rights, and state security. Both groups urged registration, identity verification, and enhanced deployment of police and officials at key entry points.

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), a pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) organisation, has urged the Meghalaya government to intensify entry checks at all state borders, citing concerns over a reported influx of people from West Bengal and Assam during ongoing electoral roll revisions in those states.

HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said the organisation is “deeply concerned about the unregulated movement of individuals into the state,” warning that such inflows could threaten public safety, internal security, and the legal rights of Meghalaya residents. He called for “urgent and firm intervention” by authorities.

Synrem emphasised that the Meghalaya government is legally empowered to regulate entry and enforce verification measures, cautioning that any delay may amount to administrative failure. The organisation demanded the use of legal provisions to regulate or temporarily restrict entry until thorough verification and risk assessment are completed.

The HYC’s recommendations include mandatory registration and identity verification of individuals coming from areas affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, deployment of police personnel and district officials at major entry points, and activation of emergency coordination mechanisms involving deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, and border management units. It also called for a formal government notification outlining the legal and administrative framework.

The group further highlighted the need for interstate coordination with West Bengal and Assam to prevent undocumented movement, noting that West Bengal and Assam are currently conducting electoral roll revisions. According to records, 46 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in Meghalaya for illegal entry in 2025.

HYC described the situation as a “serious issue of public safety and legal responsibility,” urging the state government to act swiftly, decisively, and strictly within the law.

By 2040, the demand is projected to rise to 2.84 lakh. The new West Bengal private veterinary college aims to bridge this talent gap and strengthen animal health services across the state.

The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS) and recognized by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). The agency shared this data with the Election Commission (EC) during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.

Officials also found that 13 lakh people, who never had Aadhaar cards, have passed away. The EC and UIDAI are working together to remove ghost and duplicate voters. Their goal is to make the voter list accurate and the election process transparent.

Banks are helping in this process. They are giving details of old accounts where KYC has not been updated. This helps find deceased account holders whose names still appear in voter records.

Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are visiting homes to confirm voter details. They are also collecting new forms from residents. So far, officials have distributed over 6.98 crore forms across the state.

The EC has warned strict action against anyone who fails to maintain correct records. In the future, the government will use digital voter verification and Aadhaar-linked roll tracking to build a clean and verified voter list.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched a strict action against booth-level officers (BLOs) in West Bengal. The move follows serious irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Officials said FIRs have been filed against eight booth-level agents (BLAs) for interfering in form distribution and taking control from BLOs.

At the same time, the commission issued show-cause notices to eight BLOs for violating norms. They allegedly used shortcut methods for distributing enumeration forms from one place instead of visiting homes. Despite an earlier warning, these officers from Cooch Behar, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas repeated the violation, prompting further action.

The ECI directed all Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant EROs to monitor BLOs closely. It warned that handing over forms to third parties, including relatives or friends, would be treated as a serious breach of conduct. The commission stressed that the process must strictly follow ECI guidelines.

Over four crore enumeration forms were distributed by Saturday evening. The total number of voters in West Bengal stands at 7.66 crore. The commission aims to complete distribution by the end of this month, continuing its drive for accurate electoral rolls.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered the immediate replacement of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in 79 West Bengal Assembly constituencies. Officials had selected candidates who did not meet ECI-mandated criteria.

The West Bengal government must nominate officers who satisfy ERO eligibility requirements. Only West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) officials at the ranks of sub-divisional magistrates, sub-divisional officers, or rural development officers can serve as EROs. Officials below these ranks had been wrongly appointed in 78 constituencies.

The ECI is reviewing the rank status of all 294 EROs in West Bengal. Authorities will replace officers in other constituencies if they find similar violations. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal confirmed that voters listed in 2022 remain valid.

Voters not on the 2022 list must provide ECI-approved citizenship documents. Aadhaar cards alone will not suffice. District Magistrates and Additional District Magistrates (elections) will complete the mapping process this week. Afterward, the SIR notification will be issued.
