Brookfield’s ₹7,500 Cr Boost to Andhra Pradesh Green Push

Andhra Pradesh received a major boost in its renewable energy push. The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) approved ₹7,500 crore funding for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW hybrid project in Kurnool. The ₹9,910 crore plan combines 640 MW wind and 400 MW solar power, marking REC’s largest sanction for a private venture in India.

The project is led by Evren, a joint venture between Brookfield and Axis Energy. It is part of an 8,000 MW renewable pipeline worth ₹50,000 crore. The initiative gained pace after Minister Nara Lokesh met Brookfield Global President Connor Teskey in London. Both discussed long-term clean energy and infrastructure collaborations.

Brookfield, a global renewable giant managing over US$1 trillion, will execute India’s first hybrid project under the FDRE framework. The system links grid connectivity and battery storage for steady and reliable power.

Minister Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh is fast becoming India’s renewable hub. “Such partnerships create jobs and strengthen our sustainable future,” he said, reaffirming the state’s Sunrise State vision.

India Becomes World’s Third-Largest Solar Producer

India has become the world’s third-largest solar producer with nearly 125 GW of installed capacity, said Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy. He credited India’s clear policies and consistent efforts for achieving renewable targets five years ahead of schedule. Non-fossil sources now provide over 50 percent of India’s electricity capacity.

Speaking at the curtain-raiser for the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly, Joshi said the event, scheduled for October 27-30 in New Delhi, will focus on expanding solar energy, green finance, and technology roadmaps. ISA unites 124 countries to promote global solar cooperation.

Joshi highlighted government programs like PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, benefiting over 20 lakh households, and PM-KUSUM, supporting solar pumps and small solar plants. He said these schemes bring clean energy to rural areas and empower farmers.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry, said India ranks third in total renewable energy and second in solar module manufacturing after China. He also noted India’s progress in green hydrogen, targeting five million tonnes of production by 2031.

India Adds 27GW Renewable Energy Capacity

India added 27GW of renewable energy capacity from April to August 2025. Of this, 20GW was commissioned during this period. Another 142GW is under construction, says a report by HSBC citing the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Commissioning of interstate transmission lines is progressing gradually. This is expected to speed up renewable project installations. Recent mergers, acquisitions, and potential listings by developers should also provide more capital to accelerate capacity additions.

Solar plus energy storage systems are now cheaper than ever. Recent tenders discovered tariffs as low as ₹2.7-2.76/kWh. Developers will supply power for peak and morning hours along with normal solar generation. These savings can help maintain profitability despite lower tariffs.

Power demand is slowly rising, with September seeing a 3% year-on-year increase. Experts expect a further rise in October and November due to colder weather and higher industrial activity. Slower tendering and clearing old auction backlogs could strengthen investor confidence in India’s renewable sector.
