Guwahati, Assam — 25 November 2025:
On the first day of the Assam Assembly’s winter session, Speaker Biswajit Daimary approved an adjournment motion on the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, following a request by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The decision came after opposition and independent MLAs sought permission to raise the issue in the House.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi had requested to move adjournment motions regarding the singer’s death. Before ruling on the motions, Chief Minister Sarma intervened, stating that the government shared the concern over Garg’s demise and requested that the motion be allowed. He also highlighted the urgency of introducing certain bills and supplementary grants, which needed to be placed in the House. Sarma assured that members from the Treasury benches would refrain from speaking on the motion, and the government would only provide its official response.

The Speaker approved the motion and directed that the bills and supplementary grants be introduced after the discussion on the singer’s death. He also urged members to avoid making comments that could interfere with the ongoing investigation into the case.

Zubeen Garg, a celebrated cultural icon of Assam, tragically passed away while swimming in Singapore on 19 September 2025. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police is actively probing the circumstances surrounding his death.

The approval of the adjournment motion underscores the widespread grief and concern over the singer’s untimely demise, while allowing the Assam Assembly to continue with its legislative agenda, ensuring that urgent government business proceeds alongside discussions on the incident.

The Three Worlds Unfold IFFI Showcase brought emotion, humour, and wonder to the International Film Festival of India in Panaji. The Three Worlds Unfold IFFI Showcase featured creators from Sikaar, Nilgiris: A Shared Wilderness, and Mukkam Post Bombilwadi, who shared the heart and effort behind their films.

Sikaar set an emotional tone. Director Debangkar Borgohain remembered late musician-actor Zubeen Garg, calling the film a tribute to their long collaboration. He described shooting challenges, including remotely guiding a London-based crew from Guwahati. The film’s houseful response encouraged him to keep portraying the strength and dignity of Assam.

A sense of awe arrived with Nilgiris. Associate Producer Adarsh N C explained how the team spent months capturing wildlife in 8K and 12K. He said the film celebrates coexistence and the hidden biodiversity living near people’s homes. The crew hopes audiences continue watching the documentary in theatres before it reaches OTT platforms.

Laughter filled the room when the Mukkam Post Bombilwadi team spoke. Director Paresh Mokashi discussed adapting their stage play into a 1942-set comedy. He believes humour can reveal truth without losing depth and wants regional cinema to first win hearts locally.

Together, the films showcased India’s diverse, fearless storytelling spirit.

Following the sudden death of singer Zubeen Garg, questions about the ownership of his vast music catalogue have sparked intense debate. His longtime manager Siddharth Sarma has now broken his silence with a detailed public statement, even as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe into the singer’s death and finances.

In a Facebook post, Siddharth clarified that most of Zubeen Garg’s 38,000 recorded songs are contractually owned by music labels and production houses, not by him or Zubeen’s family. He explained that the singer often felt shortchanged, with companies earning huge profits while he received only modest payments. These details, Siddharth said, can be verified directly with the respective labels.

To secure rights to his newer work, Zubeen launched Zubeen Garg Music LLP in 2021, holding a 60% stake while Siddharth was a partner. The company has earned only small amounts so far, and all funds remain untouched. Siddharth assured fans that Zubeen’s royalties and earnings will be transferred to his wife Garima Garg and family.

The singer tragically died on September 19 in Singapore during the North East Festival. He was rescued from the sea but could not be saved despite intensive care.

Siddharth admitted feeling unsafe amid the ongoing investigation but vowed to protect Zubeen’s legacy and ensure his rightful earnings reach his loved ones. Fans across India continue to mourn the voice that defined Assamese music for decades.

The BCCI will pay tribute to late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 opening ceremony on September 30 in Guwahati. The event will precede the opening match between India and Sri Lanka.

Initially planned as a grand celebration, the ceremony has been scaled down following Garg’s passing in Singapore on September 19. A 40-minute musical tribute will feature performances by Papon, Joy Barua, Shreya Ghoshal, and the Shillong Choir.

This marks the first time Assam is hosting a World Cup match. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia urged people from Guwahati, the state, and the Northeast to attend and pay homage to the music icon. The stadium is expected to reach its full capacity of approximately 40,000 spectators.

With India playing on the opening day, security has been strengthened with multiple layers and traffic management strategies. The match coincides with Mahashtami during Durga Puja, so additional traffic restrictions will be enforced. India and Sri Lanka are jointly hosting the tournament, with matches also scheduled in Indore, Visakhapatnam, Navi Mumbai, and Colombo.
