Tamil actor Manikandan has been honoured with the prestigious Kalaimamani award, Tamil Nadu’s highest civilian recognition for excellence in art and literature. The actor, chosen as a recipient for the year 2023, expressed his happiness and gratitude while reflecting on how such awards carry both celebration and responsibility.
Speaking exclusively to India Today, Manikandan said the award is not only a source of pride but also a reminder to stay committed to meaningful work. “I’m very happy. Awards come with as much responsibility as joy. They aren’t just meant to motivate you, but to remind you to remain accountable in your craft,” he shared.
He further explained that appreciation from the state government holds special value. “As artistes, we work for applause and recognition. When this acknowledgment comes from the government, it becomes an even stronger call to be more responsible,” he added.
The Kalaimamani award is one of Tamil Nadu’s most respected honours, celebrating artists who have made outstanding contributions to their fields. Manikandan’s win reflects his versatile journey as an actor, writer, and director. His 2023 release Good Night was both a critical and commercial success, while his 2022 directorial debut Narai Ezhuthum Suyasaritham showcased his storytelling skills. He also wrote and acted in Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal, further establishing his creative range.
Looking ahead, Manikandan revealed that he has wrapped up a political thriller and is working on another film with a completely different theme.
For the 2023 awards, Manikandan joins an illustrious list of honorees, including composer Anirudh Ravichander, singer Shwetha Mohan, choreographer Sandy (Santhoshkumar), actor George Maryan, and PRO Nikkil Murukan. The awards will be presented in October by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin in a grand ceremony.
