Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on January 11, 2026, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consult States before finalizing the rules for caste enumeration in the upcoming Census. Speaking from Chennai, he emphasized that caste enumeration is a highly sensitive issue that touches upon deep-rooted social dynamics and must be handled with utmost care.
CM Stalin warned that conducting caste-based enumeration without proper consultation could lead to unintended societal tensions and disputes. He stressed the importance of involving State governments in discussions to ensure that the process is transparent, inclusive, and accurate.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the data from caste enumeration could have significant implications for social justice, reservation policies, and welfare schemes. He called for a collaborative approach between the Centre and States to prevent misunderstandings and maintain social harmony.
Stalin’s appeal reflects the concerns of several regional leaders about the potential impact of caste data collection on communities.
