In a significant setback for the Punjab government, a Tarn Taran court has ordered the release of Kanchanpreet Kaur, daughter of Shiromani Akali Dal’s Tarn Taran bypoll candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa. The verdict came after an overnight hearing, with the court declaring her arrest illegal and rebuking Punjab Police for unlawful detention.
The order was pronounced at 4 am, after which Kanchanpreet Kaur visited Sri Darbar Sahib to pay obeisance. She was arrested when she reached Majitha police station in Amritsar to join the investigation in a case filed against her.
Following her release, the Shiromani Akali Dal reacted strongly on X, stating, “Dictator Bhagwant Mann has been defeated. After an overnight hearing, the honourable court ordered the release of Kanchanpreet Kaur at 4 am.”
The ruling is expected to intensify political tensions ahead of the Tarn Taran bypoll.
