Tarn Taran is in shock after three suspected drug deaths within two days. A day after two brothers died in Chabal, another young man, Nishan Singh, 24, lost his life on Monday. The incident has sparked anger among residents and raised questions about the effectiveness of the state’s Yudh Nashain Virudh campaign.
Nishan Singh, a carpenter from Baghiari village, was found dead at the local sports stadium. His brother Gurdev Singh said Nishan had a stable income but had fallen into drug addiction. Easy availability of drugs in the region, he added, is ruining many families.
Soon after the news spread, villagers gathered at the spot. Former sarpanch Paramjit Singh Pamma and others caught a man carrying a syringe and several needles. They handed him over to the police.
Tarn Taran SSP Deepak Pareek confirmed that a case has been filed against suspected suppliers. After post-mortem, Nishan’s body was given to his parents.
The sudden rise in deaths has caused outrage on social media. Many people demanded strict action against the drug mafia and tougher steps to curb the crisis. Villagers say the menace is growing despite repeated promises of government control.
