Telangana Assembly Passes Resolution Seeking Restoration of MGNREGA
The Telangana Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution urging the Union government to restore the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in its original form. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy strongly criticised the proposed replacement legislation, referred to as the VB G RAM G Act, alleging that it undermines the poor’s constitutional right to wage employment.
Participating in the discussion, Mr. Revanth Reddy said MGNREGA had been a lifeline for rural households by guaranteeing wage work and strengthening village economies. He alleged that the new Act diluted key provisions such as assured employment, transparency, and timely wage payments, thereby adversely affecting rural workers. The Chief Minister asserted that the Centre’s move reflected an anti-poor approach and ignored the hardships faced by labourers.
The resolution called upon the Union government to revoke the new Act and reinstate MGNREGA in its original spirit. Members across party lines supported the resolution, emphasising the importance of protecting rural employment and social security.
