Telangana Defends Enhanced OBC Quota in SC Ahead of Local Body Elections
The Telangana government has told the Supreme Court that its decision to enhance the Other Backward Classes (OBC) quota to 42% in local body elections reflects the “will of the people.” The state is set to hold local body polls on October 23 and 27, and the enhanced quota has become a focal point of legal and political debate.
In its submission, the state argued that the increased reservation is based on extensive social and demographic studies and aims to ensure fair political representation for backward communities. However, critics argue the move exceeds the 50% reservation cap set by the Supreme Court in earlier rulings.
The apex court is currently reviewing the matter, and its decision could have significant implications not just for Telangana but also for other states considering similar moves. The case highlights the complex balance between social justice and constitutional limits.
