The Telangana Government Changes Names of Several BC Castes after accepting recommendations from the State Backward Classes Commission. The move aims to remove derogatory or outdated caste names that many communities said caused social humiliation. Officials said the Telangana Government Changes Names of Several BC Castes to ensure respect and social equality. For example, the caste name “Dommara” will now be called “Gadavanshiya.” The government also removed the term “Pichchiguntla” and retained the name “Vamsharaj.”
In another change, the word “Shudra” was removed from the Tammali community. The Budabukkala caste will now include the name “Shivakshatriya.” Authorities also recognised “Dhobi” and “Meru” as alternative names for Chakali and Mera communities.
The BC Commission studied requests from several communities and held discussions before submitting its report. Community leaders said the old caste names affected their dignity and social identity.
The state cabinet approved the recommendations as part of efforts to promote respect and welfare for backward communities in Telangana.
