Telangana Government Gives ₹1 Crore to Constable Sowmya’s Family

Telangana excise constable Gajula Sowmya, who was seriously injured when suspected ganja smugglers ran over her vehicle in Nizamabad district, sadly died on January 31, 2026, in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. She had been on life support after the attack on January 23 while on duty.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow at her death and asked police to take strict actionagainst those responsible. The government said it will fully support Sowmya’s family.

Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao announced that the state will give ₹1 crore ex‑gratia to her family. In addition, Sowmya’s salary will continue to be paid until her retirement date, and her brother will be offered a government job.

The government also plans steps to prevent similar attacks and tighten action against drug gangs that threaten law enforcement personnel.
