The Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed the state government and the State Election Commission (SEC) to clearly state when local body elections will be conducted. The court was hearing petitions related to the delay in holding the elections due to the ongoing legal tussle over BC reservations under G.O. 9.
During the hearing, both the government and the SEC requested two weeks’ time to submit a detailed response and propose an election timeline. The High Court accepted the request and adjourned the case accordingly.
It may be recalled that the High Court had earlier stayed G.O. 9, which granted 42% reservations to Backward Classes, after multiple petitions challenged its legality. The latest directive now puts pressure on the government and SEC to finalize election dates once legal clarity is achieved.
