Bilaspur witnessed strong participation from tribal athletes across Chhattisgarh as selection trials for the Khelo India National Tribal Games began in the city. The trials are being organised by the Chhattisgarh Sports and Youth Welfare Department, with both online and on-site registration available for players. Participants were required to carry original Scheduled Tribe certificates and Aadhaar cards.
The trials, held from January 6 to January 8, aim to select state teams for seven sports disciplines. In Bilaspur, competitions in archery, athletics, and swimming for men and women are taking place at B.R. Yadav Stadium. Meanwhile, Raipur is hosting trials for weightlifting, wrestling, football, and hockey. No age limit has been fixed for participation.
Archery national medallist Chandni Sahu praised the facilities and the management of the trials, highlighting the participation from districts such as Dantewada and Raipur. Coaches Shraddha Sonwani and Durgesh Pratap Singh said the objective is to uplift tribal players and provide them international exposure. So far, 40 to 50 athletes have participated in the trials.
Chhattisgarh Athletics Association vice-president Sushil Mishra said the trials will help form a strong state team. Athlete Satyapal Kawachi expressed excitement for the games and thanked the government, noting the initiative will inspire youth across Chhattisgarh.
