Tripura Authorities Destroy Over 30 Lakh Ganja Plants in 10 Days

Security forces removing and destroying ganja plants in Tripura

Security forces in Tripura have removed and destroyed more than 30 lakh ganja plants over a ten-day period as part of an intensive anti-drug campaign. Officials said the confiscated plants had an estimated market value of around ₹145 crore.

The operation involved teams from the Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), and the Forest Department. They targeted multiple districts, including Sepahijala, Unakoti, South Tripura, and Khowai, where illegal cannabis cultivation is widespread.

In the latest round, officers destroyed roughly six lakh young ganja plants across 65 plots covering nearly 200 acres in rural areas under Sonamura, Melagarh, and Kalamchoura police stations in Sepahijala district. Earlier operations had already eliminated more than 23 lakh plants from other locations.

Authorities said most of the ganja cultivated in Tripura is trafficked to states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where it fetches higher prices. Many of the illegal plantations were found on forest land and government property.

During the campaign, security forces also made several arrests under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. In one night operation, police seized thousands of bottles of contraband cough syrup, along with cash and mobile phones from a truck near the state border.

Officials emphasized that the operations are ongoing and will continue based on intelligence inputs. Their goal is to eradicate illegal cannabis cultivation and disrupt networks that supply drugs to other states, protecting local communities from the negative impact of narcotics.

The large-scale operation has drawn attention for its speed and effectiveness, signaling that Tripura authorities are taking strong measures against drug cultivation and trafficking.
