Trump Opens US Universities to 600,000 Chinese Students Despite America First Critics

President Donald Trump announced that the United States will allow nearly 600,000 Chinese students to study in American universities, even as his administration maintains a tough stance on international students. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the “very important relationship” between Washington and Beijing, suggesting a softer tone compared to his earlier “America First” approach.

This move comes while the White House pressures China over trade and rare earth supplies. Trump warned Beijing of 200% tariffs if it restricts US access to rare earth magnets. Yet, he assured that trade disputes would not block Chinese students from pursuing higher education in America.

The decision sparked outrage among Trump’s core MAGA base. Conservative activist Laura Loomer accused Chinese students of being “CCP spies,” while Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed they would “replace American students’ opportunities.” Critics said the move betrayed the America First policy.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the President, stating that without Chinese students in US universities, the bottom 15% of colleges could collapse financially. The announcement marks a sharp contrast to the administration’s earlier visa crackdown, where officials pledged stricter scrutiny of Chinese applicants in sensitive fields.
