Trump demands EU join 100% tariffs on India and China, linking the move to efforts to cut Russian oil revenues. According to a Financial Times report, Trump dialed into a meeting in Washington between senior US and EU officials to push his plan.
He told allies that the United States is “ready to go right now” but wants Europe to step up. US officials added that Washington could mirror any EU tariffs on India and China, which might dramatically raise duties on imports from both countries. Trump has already increased tariffs to 50% on Indian goods and 30% on Chinese exports.
Trump demands EU join 100% tariffs on India and China at a time when his frustration is growing over the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war. He recently threatened more sanctions after Moscow launched its largest air strikes on Ukraine. He also warned that countries buying Russian oil risk penalties.
The move, however, appears contradictory. On Truth Social, Trump praised ongoing trade talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “very good friend” and expressing confidence that negotiations would reach a “successful conclusion” for both nations. This dual approach highlights the mixed signals in Washington’s trade strategy.
