US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he is ending all trade talks with Canada. He blamed “egregious behaviour” by the Canadian government. This follows Canadian TV ads criticising US tariffs.
Trump wrote on social media that the ads were unacceptable from a close trading partner. He also stressed, “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY OF THE USA,” showing how crucial tariffs are for US security and economy.
The ads, made by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, cost $75 million. They feature former President Ronald Reagan, who warned in 1987 that high tariffs shrink markets, close businesses, and cost millions of jobs. The ad also shows workers and families affected by tariffs.
Ford said the government wants to share this message “to every Republican district” in the US. He argued the ad is truthful. However, the Ronald Reagan Foundation called it a misrepresentation and is reviewing legal options.
Meanwhile, Canada plans to expand exports to countries beyond the US to reduce dependence on American trade. Overall, this decision marks a sharp escalation in US-Canada trade tensions.
