Trump Predicts End to India’s Dependence on Russian Oil
U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that India’s shift away from Russian oil “will be over soon,” hinting at renewed pressure on New Delhi to reduce energy ties with Moscow. During his earlier administration, Trump pushed India to scale back its reliance on Russian oil, citing geopolitical tensions and U.S. sanctions. However, the Modi-led Indian government resisted the pressure, emphasizing its strategic autonomy and energy security. In response, the U.S. imposed an additional 25% tariff on select Indian goods, further straining bilateral trade relations. Despite the friction, India continued to diversify its oil imports while maintaining relations with Russia. Trump’s recent comments suggest that a decisive policy shift could be imminent, potentially influenced by evolving global dynamics and future U.S.-India negotiations. As both nations eye stronger strategic ties, energy cooperation remains a critical and sensitive component of their partnership.
