President Donald Trump joked that the US could approve Saudi Arabia’s massive weapons purchases in just one day. He made the remark at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington while addressing Elon Musk in the audience. Trump has launched a government efficiency push this year and suggested that Musk understands the delays in major decisions.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is on a high-profile visit to Washington. Trump has claimed that Saudi Arabia plans to buy around $142 billion in US weapons and services. The biggest headline is Trump’s approval for selling F-35 fighter jets, a long-term Saudi goal. A White House fact sheet also highlighted nearly 300 US-made tanks and future F-35 deliveries.
However, the actual process is complex and involves many steps. After early discussions, the foreign buyer sends a formal request. The request circulates among congressional committees, the Pentagon, and the State Department. Only after State Department clearance does the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notify Congress.
Congress cannot directly approve a sale, but lawmakers can block it during the review period. Some lawmakers have raised concerns about protecting US military technology and maintaining Israel’s military edge. The US is legally required to ensure Israel keeps superior technology in the region. This requirement often delays Middle East weapons deals.
