Washington News: Speculation has grown over a possible massive tariff on India after comments from US Senator Lindsey Graham. He suggested that countries buying Russian oil could face a 500 percent tariff. The proposal may come up for voting as early as next week.
Graham said former US President Donald Trump has shown agreement with a bipartisan sanctions bill. The bill targets nations that continue purchasing discounted Russian oil. It aims to choke funding for Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
Although Trump has not made an official public announcement, Graham claimed the former president supports the move. He said the timing is right as Ukraine seeks peace, while Russian attacks continue. Graham described the bill as a strong economic weapon.
The proposed law would give the US president wide powers. It would allow punitive tariffs against countries like India, China, and Brazil. These nations currently import Russian crude at discounted rates.
Graham stated that such oil purchases indirectly support President Vladimir Putin’s war machinery. He argued that economic pressure is necessary to change Moscow’s behavior. The bill seeks to deter global buyers from engaging with Russian energy exports.
If passed, the legislation could impact India-US trade relations. It may also raise fuel cost concerns globally. Officials in India have not yet responded to the development.
The situation now depends on the US Senate vote expected next week.
