Former President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning on Sunday about expanding U.S. sanctions. He said any country that continues business with Russia will face “very severe” penalties. Trump spoke to reporters at Palm Beach International Airport and confirmed that Republican lawmakers are drafting legislation to tighten pressure on Moscow. He also suggested adding Iran to the targets under review.
Trump announced new sanctions on Russian oil giants Lukoil and Rosneft. The penalties take effect on November 21. He said Russia refuses to engage in serious talks to end the war in Ukraine, so the United States must respond with stronger action.
The administration also moved against India for buying Russian oil. It added a 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total tariff rate to 50%. U.S. officials said Russia shows no interest in peace, which forces Washington to increase economic pressure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the pressure campaign. He said no nation should make decisions under foreign threats. Putin warned that wider sanctions could spike global oil prices and hurt U.S. consumers.
The proposed legislation could reshape global trade. It targets not only adversaries but any country that partners with sanctioned entities. With Iran now under consideration, the geopolitical impact could intensify.
