Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s Minister for AI and Online Safety, praised India’s growing role in global AI governance during the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. Speaking at the British Council, he said the summit marks a shift from theory to practical AI adoption. Around 20 heads of state and more than 45 ministerial delegations are participating, showing wider global interest in inclusive AI development.
Narayan rejected the idea that India is only an emerging AI player. He described the country as a global technology talent hub and praised its focus on efficient language models for low-cost devices. He said both India and the United Kingdom share a mission to bring AI benefits to everyday lives.
On regulation, he said governments must understand fast-moving technologies before setting rules. He highlighted the UK’s evidence-based approach through its AI Security Institute. At the same time, he argued that strong regulation is necessary when online harms threaten women, children, or social stability.
Narayan linked future cooperation to the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and its innovation chapter. He said the next phase will focus on research partnerships, trade, and opportunities for young professionals. He also reflected on his journey from Muzaffarpur in Bihar to public service in United Kingdom, calling people-to-people ties central to the bilateral relationship.
