The United Nations launched the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance during a high-level meeting. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that AI is already transforming the world and must be governed responsibly. He highlighted the need for collective action to ensure AI benefits humanity.
The Dialogue builds on the Global Digital Compact, the first universal agreement on AI governance adopted last year. It is structured around three pillars: policy, science, and capacity. These pillars aim to promote safe, trustworthy, and interoperable AI systems accessible to all countries.
UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock stressed that AI’s benefits are concentrated, leaving much of the world, particularly the Global South, on the sidelines. She warned that AI’s energy demands could worsen climate change without clean energy solutions and called for equitable access to AI technologies.
The initiative also includes the International Independent Scientific Panel on AI to provide guidance on research and ethics. The high-level meeting brought together member states, UN agencies, and stakeholders to discuss inclusive AI governance. The Dialogue seeks to create a platform where governments, industry, and civil society collaboratively shape AI’s future.
