The US government has rolled out stricter rules under the US F1 visa rules, directly impacting Indian students and other international aspirants. From now on, F-1 visa holders cannot switch their university or program in the first year. Graduate students face tougher limits, as they are not allowed to change their field of study at all after joining.

Students finishing one degree will also need a new visa if they plan to study again at the same or lower level. Earlier, visa length matched the program duration. Under the new system, visas will run for a fixed term depending on the education level.

The Department of Homeland Security has asked officers to apply closer checks during visa approval. Immigration history, family ties, and conduct will come under review. Any support for anti-American or extremist ideologies could lead to denial or cancellation.

These changes will take effect within the next two months. Experts warn that reduced flexibility and tighter checks may discourage many Indian students preparing for US admissions this Fall.
