The United States is increasing pressure on Ukraine to accept the framework of a Washington-brokered peace deal. Two individuals familiar with the discussions said that Washington warned Kyiv it could reduce intelligence sharing and weapons supplies if Ukraine refuses. US officials want Ukraine to sign the draft agreement before next Thursday. Sources say the plan reflects several Russian demands. It requires Ukraine to give up more territory, limit the size of its army, and stay out of NATO. One source said the United States now wishes to end the conflict and expects Ukraine to “pay the price” for a settlement.
Senior American military leaders visited Kyiv on Thursday to present the terms and discuss a possible path to peace. They held talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky. The US ambassador to Ukraine and the army’s public affairs chief called the meeting successful. They confirmed that Washington seeks an “aggressive timeline” for signing a formal document between the two countries.
The discussions come at a crucial moment for Ukraine. Kyiv has warned that losing full US support could severely weaken its position in the war and in future negotiations.
