The United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker, Marinera, in the North Sea after a pursuit lasting over two weeks. US authorities acted amid reports that Russia attempted to shield the vessel with naval escorts. Russia’s Foreign Ministry urged Washington to ensure humane treatment of Russian crew members. It also demanded respect for their legal rights and interests.
Russia’s Ministry of Transport said international law bars force against legally registered foreign vessels. The ministry cited the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which the US recognises but has not ratified. US European Command confirmed the seizure in a public statement. It said the operation involved the Justice Department, Homeland Security, and the Defence Department.
Officials stated that the tanker violated US sanctions. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said enforcement against illicit Venezuelan oil remains global and firm. The UK confirmed it provided operational support at Washington’s request. British forces assisted US assets in the North Atlantic region.
The tanker, previously named Bella 1, was sanctioned in 2024. It had sailed from Iran toward Venezuela before changing course to avoid a blockade. US surveillance closely tracked the vessel for days. Earlier boarding attempts near Venezuela reportedly failed. The seizure occurred without Russian ships nearby, avoiding a direct confrontation.
