A former Bangladeshi minister has blamed the USAID and the Clinton family for the 2024 uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina. Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, a close aide to Hasina, spoke to Russia Today about an alleged US-backed plan to remove her from power.
He claimed that US-funded groups had worked for years to weaken Hasina’s rule. According to him, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Republican Institute ran anti-government campaigns since 2018. These efforts, he said, paved the way for violent protests and regime change.
Chowdhury also linked Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and the Clinton family to long-term political interference in Bangladesh. He said millions in USAID funds “disappeared” and were used to fuel unrest. The 2024 protests killed at least 700 people and targeted Hindu minorities.
Hasina fled to Delhi on August 5, minutes before a mob stormed her home. Yunus later took charge as interim leader and shifted foreign policy closer to Pakistan.
Chowdhury called the events a “carefully planned coup” funded by Western interests. The United States dismissed the allegations as “laughable.”
