The Vaishno Devi Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir has officially resumed after a 22-day suspension, following a deadly landslide that claimed the lives of 34 pilgrims. The tragic incident occurred on August 26, 2025, near the Ardhkuwari section of the trekking route. The landslide not only led to the loss of lives but also injured 20 others, leaving many devastated.
After careful assessment of the route and weather conditions, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) announced that the yatra would resume on September 17, 2025. This decision was welcomed by many devotees who had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to complete their pilgrimage.
The suspension of the yatra was initially scheduled to last for just a few days, but due to persistent heavy rainfall and unsafe conditions along the path, the pilgrimage was put on hold for an extended period. Authorities took the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the pilgrims by clearing debris, conducting safety checks, and ensuring that infrastructure along the route was safe for use.
With the skies now clearer and the terrain secure, the yatra has been allowed to continue. Pilgrims have been advised to follow strict safety guidelines, especially with the onset of the Navratri festival. As the festival approaches, the shrine is expected to see a large influx of devotees, making the reopening of the yatra a timely event for many seeking the blessings of Goddess Vaishno Devi.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of following safety protocols, especially with the influx of visitors expected in the coming days. The resumption of the yatra is seen as a step toward healing, bringing together the faithful who have been waiting to pay their respects at the sacred shrine.
