European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned the United States against escalating tensions over Greenland. She spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She said Europe would respond in an unflinching, united, and proportional manner. She cautioned that confrontation could damage long-standing transatlantic ties.
Von der Leyen said trade disputes would only help shared adversaries. She stressed that allies must respect agreements. She added that trust matters when partners shake hands. Her comments followed renewed remarks from Donald Trump. He said the United States must acquire Greenland. He suggested European leaders would not strongly resist the plan.
Trump has threatened tariffs on Britain and seven European countries. The measures could start next month. European capitals have discussed countermeasures. Washington warned that retaliation would be unwise.
Von der Leyen called the proposed tariffs a mistake. She urged dialogue instead of pressure tactics. She also announced new EU initiatives on Arctic security. The Commission plans support for regional defense capabilities. It also plans major investments in Greenland’s economy and infrastructure.
She said the EU would cooperate with the United States and other partners on Arctic stability. Planned defense spending may support icebreaker projects and critical security equipment.
