WHO Issues Safety Alert on Contaminated Medicines from Three Indian Pharma Firms
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a medical product alert regarding three contaminated oral liquid medicines found in India. The affected products—COLDRIF, Respifresh TR, and ReLife—were manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceutical, Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and Shape Pharma, respectively.
Specific batches of these medicines were found to contain unacceptable levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, toxic substances known to cause serious health risks, including acute kidney injury and death, especially in children.
The alert urges regulatory authorities and the public to immediately stop using the identified batches and ensure proper disposal. WHO has called for increased vigilance, testing, and stronger quality control measures across pharmaceutical manufacturing in India.
This warning follows a series of global incidents involving contaminated medicines and raises fresh concerns over drug safety and regulatory oversight in the country. Investigations and recalls are currently underway.
