Why Many Indians Are Deficient in Vitamin D
Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine vitamin” because our body makes it when skin is exposed to sunlight. However, 30 to 50 percent of Indians suffer from vitamin D deficiency. This is much higher than in developed countries like the U.K. and the U.S.
One main reason is poor exposure to sunlight. Many people stay indoors, use sunscreen, or wear clothes that cover most of their body. Air pollution also blocks sunlight, reducing vitamin D production. Another reason is diet. Many Indians follow vegetarian diets that lack natural sources of vitamin D, such as fish and eggs.
In addition, dairy products in India are usually not fortified with vitamin D, unlike in many other countries. Doctors warn that vitamin D deficiency can cause weak bones, low immunity, and fatigue. Experts suggest safe sun exposure, balanced diets, and fortified foods to address this growing health issue.
