The Yamuna Delhi flood alert has been issued after the river crossed the danger mark at the Old Railway Bridge on Wednesday morning. Water levels touched 205.35 metres, slightly above the threshold of 205.33 metres, forcing authorities to prepare for evacuations in vulnerable low-lying areas.
Officials from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) said that continuous monitoring is underway, with teams stationed along the riverbanks to ensure quick response if levels rise further. Relief camps have already been set up at strategic points, while residents living in vulnerable zones have been asked to remain alert and ready to move.
The increase in water levels comes after heavy rainfall in Delhi and its upstream states, which forced Haryana to release excess water from the Hathnikund barrage into the Yamuna. Meteorological forecasts suggest more showers in the coming days, raising concerns of further inflow.
Authorities have also restricted movement near the Old Railway Bridge and advised fishermen and boatmen to avoid venturing into the river. With the city already struggling with waterlogging in several localities, the situation along the Yamuna remains critical.
