Yanamala Urges Steps to Lift 50% Cap on BC Reservation
Senior leader Yanamala Ramakrishnudu has urged the government to take immediate steps to remove the cap on reservation for Backward Classes (BCs). He emphasized that the current 50% limit on quota, imposed by the Supreme Court, restricts the constitutional rights of BC communities and hampers their opportunities in education and employment.
Yanamala suggested two possible approaches to address the issue: amending the Constitution to allow greater flexibility in reservation policies or encouraging states to file petitions in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its earlier order. He stressed that proactive measures are needed to ensure that the benefits of affirmative action reach all eligible communities without legal or procedural constraints.
The leader also called on policymakers to engage in wide consultations with social groups and legal experts to devise a sustainable solution that balances merit, social justice, and constitutional provisions. Immediate action, he said, is essential to uphold the rights of BCs.
