Youth Congress workers staged a black flag protest against Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan when he arrived at Kovalam on Friday to inaugurate the Kerala-European Union Blue Economy Conclave. The protest reflected growing frustration among opposition parties with the state government’s actions.
Police arrested at least five Youth Congress activists during the demonstration. Party leaders accused the Kerala government of using law enforcement to suppress opposition voices. In response, the Youth Congress called for statewide protests, urging supporters to demonstrate peacefully against political intimidation and to demand accountability from the ruling administration.
The Blue Economy Conclave, which focuses on sustainable marine and coastal initiatives, proceeded despite the disruption. Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the importance of protecting Kerala’s marine resources and boosting economic growth through responsible policies. He also highlighted Kerala’s collaboration with the European Union to promote research, investment, and innovation in the blue economy sector.
Youth Congress leaders said the black flag protest aimed to raise awareness about government overreach and ensure citizens’ voices are not ignored. They stated that more rallies and peaceful demonstrations would follow across the state.
Political analysts note that tensions between the ruling party and opposition have intensified ahead of upcoming elections. The protest in Kovalam underscores the challenges the state government faces in balancing governance with political dissent.
