Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet US President Donald Trump next week at the United Nations. He aims to press Washington for stronger sanctions on Russia amid escalating attacks.Zelenskyy posted on X that he expects “strong sanctions steps” from the United States while Europe is doing its part. Trump had earlier signaled readiness for “major sanctions” if NATO allies stop buying Russian oil.

The Ukrainian leader also intends to discuss long-term security guarantees to protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned against any Western troops stationed in Ukraine.

Moscow launched one of its largest overnight assaults in recent months, firing 40 missiles and 580 drones. At least three people were killed and dozens injured. NATO allies responded by strengthening defenses along Europe’s eastern borders.

Polish jets were scrambled in a preventative operation after strikes near its frontier, while the UK patrolled Polish skies under NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission. Tensions rose when three Russian jets reportedly entered Estonian airspace for 12 minutes. Estonia confirmed the breach, but Russia denied the incident.
