Zohran Mamdani Creates History as First Indian-American Muslim Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has made history by becoming the youngest and first Indian-American Muslim mayor of New York City. His victory celebration took a Bollywood turn when the hit song ‘Dhoom Machale’ from the movie Dhoom played as he ended his speech.

As the energetic track filled the hall, Mamdani waved to cheering supporters before embracing his wife, Rama Duwaji. Moments later, his parents — Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair — joined him on stage.

The video of the Bollywood moment quickly went viral on social media. One user called it Mamdani’s “unreal aura,” while another described it as “a perfect finale for a campaign that electrified New York’s political stage.” A third said it felt like a “real-life Bollywood movie.”

In his fiery victory speech, Mamdani thanked the youth of New York. “We’ll fight for you because we are you,” he said. He also addressed Donald Trump directly: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you — turn the volume up.

Mamdani will officially take office on January 1, marking a new chapter in New York’s political history.
