Zohran Mamdani Leads NYC Mayoral Race as Election Day Arrives
Zohran Kwame Mamdani has emerged as the frontrunner in New York City’s mayoral election on November 4, 2025. The 34-year-old Indian-origin state assembly member and democratic socialist is running on a progressive platform of rent freezes, fare-free buses, universal childcare, and city-owned grocery stores.
Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and now faces Cuomo, running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Early voting, which began on October 25, ended on Sunday, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day.
Strong support from Black, Hispanic, and Asian communities has propelled Mamdani to a commanding lead of nearly 20 points, according to recent polls. If elected, he would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor, marking a historic moment in the city’s political landscape.
