125-Foot Raja Raja Chola Statue Planned in Thanjavur

125-foot Raja Raja Chola statue

The 125-foot Raja Raja Chola statue will soon become a major landmark at the Grand Chola Museum in Thanjavur. The DMK government announced the plan as part of its effort to honour iconic Tamil rulers.

Public Works Department Minister E.V. Velu shared the decision on Saturday. He said the 125-foot Raja Raja Chola statue will celebrate the legacy of one of Tamil Nadu’s greatest emperors. Moreover, the project reflects the State’s focus on history and cultural pride.

The Minister explained that the statue will follow the design of the Raja Raja Chola statue near Sivaganga Park in Thanjavur. Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had installed that statue earlier. Meanwhile, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin continues to closely monitor the new project.

According to Mr. Velu, the government plans to place the statue at the Grand Chola Museum. Therefore, the site will emerge as a key cultural and tourism centre. Raja Raja Chola ruled during the peak of the Chola Empire and strengthened administration, architecture, and maritime trade.

To prepare for the large-scale construction, Mr. Velu recently visited Gujarat. There, he studied the Statue of Unity dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Officials now plan to apply those technical learnings in Thanjavur.

Finally, the government expects the project to boost tourism. It will also deepen public awareness of Tamil history and heritage.
