Shashi Tharoor Warns Dynastic Politics Undermines India’s Democratic Values
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has described dynastic politics as a “grave threat” to India’s democracy, warning that it undermines merit and weakens governance. He said political power based on lineage rather than ability, commitment, or grassroots connection erodes public trust and the effectiveness of leadership.
Tharoor cited examples of family dominance in both national and regional parties, urging political organisations to prioritise talent and internal democracy over inheritance. He called for reforms such as transparent party elections, term limits, and stronger voter awareness to ensure leaders are chosen on merit.
The remarks have sparked debate across the political spectrum, with the BJP welcoming Tharoor’s comments and Congress leaders defending the role of legacy in Indian politics. Tharoor emphasized that a healthy democracy must reward service and competence, not family background, to strengthen institutions and governance in the long term.
