Urban Families to Save Rs 140 per 100 Units

cheaper electricity in Bihar urban consumers benefit

Urban families will soon benefit from cheaper electricity in Bihar. The state power company has proposed a new plan that will reduce electricity bills for more than 3.5 million urban consumers. This change will start on April 1, 2026, after approval from the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission. Many families will save money every month because the new rates will be almost equal to rural rates. This move supports the state’s goal of giving cheaper electricity in Bihar to all households.

The company introduced a single-slab system in rural areas last year. Now, it wants to extend the same system to cities. At present, consumers pay ₹4.12 per unit for the first 100 units because the government gives a subsidy of ₹3.30 per unit. Without the subsidy, the cost is ₹7.42 per unit.

From July 2025, the first 125 units will be free for every household. This will help most families in urban areas, as they usually consume 200–225 units each month. A family using even 100 units will save ₹140 monthly.

The number of urban electricity users is growing every year. In the 2024–25 financial year, the total will reach over 3.1 million. This reduction plan may save consumers around ₹50 crore every month.
