A controversy has erupted in Punjab after the state government announced a “fancy-dress competition” to mark the martyrdom day of the Chhote Sahibzadas, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj strongly criticised the move, saying such events are insensitive and disrespectful to Sikh sentiments.

In his statement, the Jathedar warned that no district authority or school should organise fancy-dress competitions on themes related to the Sahibzadas, Mata Gujar Kaur, or Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. He said the Child Welfare Council’s issued directives reflect a lack of understanding of Sikh principles and traditions by both the Central and Punjab governments.

While welcoming the Centre’s decision to commemorate the martyrdom at the national level, the Jathedar stressed that the day must be observed as “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas” instead of “Veer Bal Diwas.”

He has also instructed the SGPC to ensure immediate cancellation of such events and to officially correct the name of the commemoration day.
