170 government schools do not have a toilet in Karnataka, according to fresh data released by the State Education Department. The figures have triggered concern over basic facilities in public schools. Officials also confirmed that 170 government schools do not have a toilet in Karnataka, and 61 schools lack access to safe drinking water.
The department said the government has started taking corrective steps. For the 2025–26 academic year, it has allocated ₹90 crore to construct new toilets in government schools. Currently, the action plan approval process is under way, and authorities will release funds to districts in phases.
Education officers explained that poor sanitation directly affects student attendance. In particular, girls often miss school due to the absence of proper toilet facilities. Therefore, improving sanitation and drinking water access has become a priority.
Many rural schools still depend on temporary or shared arrangements. However, these solutions often fail to meet hygiene standards.
To speed up progress, the government plans to work with local bodies, CSR partners, and community groups. In addition, officials will track progress through regular inspections and school-level reports.
Meanwhile, parents and teachers have urged the State to act faster. They stressed that basic amenities must come before new academic reforms.
