The incident happened on the night of December 31. The victim, identified as Ram Udgaar Yadav, was stopped by police while riding a motorcycle. In the video, officers are seen dragging him to the ground and assaulting him with kicks and shoes. The visuals triggered anger among the public and political circles.
Senior police officials took quick action after the video spread widely. Two police personnel involved in the assault were suspended. The station in-charge was also asked to submit an explanation. Officials said strict action would follow if further violations were found.
Police sources later claimed that the former councillor was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He was produced before a court, fined, and released.
