Assembly Seeks Atishi Reply Over AAP MLAs Suspension Row

Assembly Seeks Atishi Reply

Assembly Seeks Atishi Reply after the Delhi Assembly Secretariat asked Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Leader of the Opposition Atishi to submit a written response over her comments on the suspension of party MLAs. The request relates to remarks she made during the Winter Session, where she alleged malafide intent behind the action taken against Opposition legislators.

Four AAP MLAs — Sanjeev Jha, Som Dutt, Kuldeep Kumar, and Jarnail Singh — were marshalled out of the House on January 6 following disruptions. Atishi later questioned the grounds for their suspension and accused the ruling side of acting with political bias. These remarks triggered objections from the Treasury benches.

In an official letter, the Assembly Secretariat said the issue involved “incorrect and malafide statements” regarding the suspension. Speaker Vijender Gupta referred the matter to the Committee of Privileges, which examines breaches of legislative privilege and conduct inside the House. The committee has now sought Atishi’s written explanation.

Assembly Seeks Atishi Reply at a time when tensions remain high between the ruling party and the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly. AAP leaders have defended their stand and said the suspensions curtailed democratic dissent. BJP members, however, have maintained that the action followed established rules and procedure.

The committee’s findings may shape future debates on discipline, free speech, and accountability within the Assembly.
