Shreyas Iyer leadership role after Asia Cup snub has given the star batter a renewed chance to showcase his abilities. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Saturday that Iyer will captain India A in two multi-day matches against Australia A, a move that could shape his international future.

The decision comes shortly after Iyer’s unexpected exclusion from the Asia Cup squad, which sparked debates among fans and experts. Despite the disappointment, selectors have now recognized his leadership potential. As captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL, Iyer led from the front with more than 600 runs at a strike rate of 175, guiding the franchise to their first final in 11 years.

Reports also suggest that Iyer is in contention to take over as India’s next ODI captain after Rohit Sharma. While Shubman Gill is another name being considered, Iyer’s tactical sharpness and batting form make him a strong candidate.

In red-ball cricket, Iyer has been absent from the Test team since 2024. The India A assignment offers him a pathway back. If he delivers against Australia A, selectors may reward him with a recall for the upcoming West Indies and South Africa series. With Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair struggling in recent games, the door is open for Iyer’s return.

This leadership role is more than just a consolation after the Asia Cup snub. It provides Iyer with a platform to prove his consistency, regain trust, and strengthen his case as a leader for India across formats.
