A security breach in Mumbai has raised serious concerns after a man disguised as naval staff fled with a rifle and ammunition. The incident happened late Saturday night inside a naval residential area in South Mumbai. The Mumbai Police and the Indian Navy have launched a joint search operation.
Officials said the breach occurred when a junior sailor was on sentry duty. A man in naval uniform approached him and claimed he was the replacement. Trusting the claim, the sailor handed over his rifle and ammunition. Soon after, the fake officer vanished with the weapon.
The Indian Navy confirmed the incident on Monday. It said the loss of the rifle and ammunition was reported on September 6, 2025. A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act has been filed at Cuffe Parade Police Station.
Both Mumbai Police and the Navy are working with other agencies to trace the suspect. Security checks in the city have been strengthened. Authorities are treating the case as a serious threat to national security.
