The year 1908 remains unforgettable in Hyderabad’s history, when devastating floods in the Musi River claimed thousands of lives. To prevent such tragedies, legendary engineer Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya devised a dual strategy in 1909—the foundation of the Musi Project.
His vision introduced twin reservoirs (Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar), designed to both control floods and meet the city’s drinking water needs. At a time when modern technology was limited, Visvesvaraya’s foresight gifted Hyderabad a robust drainage system that has stood the test of time.
Revered as a genius engineer, planner, and statesman, his contributions extended beyond Hyderabad to national projects that shaped India’s infrastructure. On his birth anniversary today, citizens fondly remember the man who not only safeguarded the city from recurring floods but also laid the groundwork for its urban water management , earning him eternal respect as Hyderabad’s true “Moksham.”
