Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday clarified in the Rajya Sabha that the ongoing discussion on Vande Mataram must remain separate from the upcoming West Bengal elections. His remarks came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the debate in the Lok Sabha. Shah said the national song reflects India’s cultural strength and patriotic spirit, and its significance should not be reduced to political strategy.
He emphasised that Vande Mataram stands above electoral narratives and deserves respect for its role in shaping India’s freedom movement. Strengthening public understanding of the song, he added, will help future generations appreciate the nation’s history and identity.
Shah urged political parties to maintain dignity while addressing national symbols and avoid framing the debate around election politics. He said national symbols unite citizens and should remain untouched by partisan conflicts, especially when several states prepare for polls.
