West Bengal Voter List Faces Massive Cleanup Ahead of Elections

West Bengal’s voter list is set for a major overhaul as the Election Commission moves to delete more than 58 lakh names from the rolls. The revision comes ahead of the Assembly elections due early next year. EC officials say the ongoing Special Intensive Revision has revealed large-scale discrepancies across the state.

The latest counting shows 58,08,002 names marked for deletion. This includes 24,18,699 deceased voters. Another 12,01,462 people could not be located despite repeated home visits by Booth Level Officers. A voter enters the missing category when the BLO fails to trace them even after three attempts.

Officials also flagged 19,93,087 voters who shifted to new addresses. Their names appeared at multiple locations, so the Commission will retain only the correct entry. The EC also detected 1,37,575 fraudulent voters. Another 57,509 entries fall under the “other” category and will be removed.

The draft list will be published on December 16. Citizens may file complaints, after which hearings will take place. The final voter list will be released on February 14, 2026.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to attack the EC over the revision drive. She accused the BJP of using the process politically, while the BJP accused her of creating unrest.
